IMIS Global presented a paper at the Austrian Maritime Safety Authority Nav18 conference. It has been determined that a significant portion of maritime authorities make use of 14 different AIS messages and most of the Application Specific Messages contained in documents such as the IMO Circular SN.1 289 are not regularly used.

The use of these messages will enhance the service offered by shore side authorities to ships that are within range of the AIS base stations.
